Decrepit Birth: ...And time begins
26/10/07 || The Duff
I guess there are bands out there that can perform ultra-brutal, ultra-technical death metal and appear more than just a parody of themselves. Disgorge (USA) is not one of them, yet Decrepit Birth is, and I’m scratching my noodle as to why this is the case, as both bands play identical styles of music.
If I were to listen to the former’s “Consume the Forsaken” and this here album back to back, the production would be the only discernible difference I’d be able to identify – whereas Decrepit Birth don’t make it easy on themselves with the production on this disc, they sure as fuck make “... And Time Begins” more listener-friendly than the one Disgorge outing I’ve heard.
Of course, there are some subtler differences between both bands, although why this would make either one stand out over the other is beyond me – it’s obvious which of the two is the better one, but then you have to ask yourself whether very loud drums over tough to make out guitars all played at 1000 bpm really should have any kind of appeal.
Decrepit Birth are probably more technical, producing some of the most dizzying rhythms and arrangements I’ve heard put to disc (having Tim Yeung behind the kit sure doesn’t hurt), making this band possibly the most technical death metal band of its kind – think Origin with no lead-guitar riffs and you’d be close, except these guys refuse to compromise in the slightest.
I thought I had something else to write about, but that just about sums it up. I can’t talk about Tim Yeung’s drumming, because you already know that it fucken kills – the guy isn’t human. Why would you want this disc? It’s very technical, and likely to rip out the asshole of anything of woman born.
7 stampeding drummers out of 10.
